What Is the Job Doing for Me What Is the Job Doing for Me? A Test of the Job Characteristics Model among Indian Police Officers Hanif Qureshi (University of Cincinnati) Charles Klahm (Wayne State University) Brad Smith (Wayne State University) James Frank (University of Cincinnati) Eric Lambert (University of Mississippi Nancy Hogan (Ferris State University)

Overview Job Characteristics Model Job Stress Job Satisfaction Importance Job Satisfaction

Review There is a small (but growing) body of research on the job characteristics model Vast majority of this research focuses on police in western nations, especially the U.S. The of job characteristics may be contextual and vary across nations India Second most populous nation in the world and most populous democracy Brief overview of the Indian police force

Method One district selected Survey of all officers How and where officers completed survey Response rate

Method Continued The variables used in the study presented in Table 1, along with univariate statistics Bivariate results (correlations) presented in Table 2 Multivariate results (regression) presented in Table 3

Discussion Effects of job characteristics varied Job autonomy was only job characteristic to have a significant association with job stress (negative); non- significant for job satisfaction. Job variety, training, and supervision all had significant positive relationships with job satisfaction. Based on R2, job characteristics appear to play a greater role in helping shape job satisfaction than job stress.

Discussion Continued While somewhat similar, the findings differ from Western/U.S. studies Limitations Alpha values lower than from U.S. studies Look at other job characteristics Break supervision done into various dimensions Based on R2 values, other variables account for observed variance in job satisfaction and especially job stress

Conclusion Job Stress and Job Satisfaction are important concepts for police agencies and researchers The Job Characteristics Model needs further research Need more studies among Indian police officers Need studies of police in other nations Thank you and Have a great conference!
