Christmas Charity Appeal Project

Chosen Charity The Scoliosis Association (UK) The reason I have chosen this charity is because one of my closest friend has suffered from scoliosis for quite some time and her journey through it is just incredible and I would like to support this charity as it would mean so much to her and to many people who also suffer from scoliosis as it’s a charity no one has really heard about and to do this I am going to create a poster and a 30 second radio advert. My aim is to make the viewers realise the realisation that many people do suffer from it and the people who do suffer from it I want them to feel like they are not alone and there are other people out there who are going through the same experience as they are.

The Scoliosis Association (UK) Research http://www.sauk.org.uk/ Scoliosis is when the spine curves to the side and the spine can also twist at the same time. This twisting can pull the ribcage out of position. Many people have not heard of scoliosis but it is not rare as 3 to 4 children per 1000 need specialist supervision. Scoliosis can affect people at different points in their lives. It can happen, Before birth, In young children, In older children and teenagers and adults, Scoliosis can affect a person’s appearance because when the spine bends to the side, the small bones that make up the spine called vertebrae can become twisted. The twisted vertebrae can pull the ribs round with them, which sometimes causes a lump to form on the person’s back or for their back to appear rounded. Other possible signs of scoliosis are a shoulder blade that sticks out or an uneven waist.

Primary Research For my primary research I did a questionnaire on my Instagram story to see if people know about the scoliosis association the questions I used were Have you ever heard of a charity called The Scoliosis Association? 36% Yes – 64% No Have you ever seen it advertised? 7% Yes – 93% No Have you ever donated to The Scoliosis Association? 10% Yes - 90% No Have you been involved in fundraising for The Scoliosis Association? 14% Yes – 86% No Do you know anyone who has suffered from Scoliosis? 54% Yes – 46% No Do you know what scoliosis is? 68% Yes – 32% No Are you aware of different types of scoliosis? 38% Yes - 62% No Have you ever heard of Scolismart? 10% Yes – 90% No As you can see from my primary research not many has heard of the charity but many people know someone who does suffer scoliosis and probably hasn’t heard about the charity either and it would like to advertise this charity and letting people know who do have scoliosis that there's a charity that can help them.

Secondary research Backbone Magazine For my secondary research I looked to see if there's any advertisement to the charity and stumbled across a magazine that they and produce called Backbone and it is published twice a year this magazine give advise on scoliosis and has other people experience dealing with scoliosis the magazine features from specialists and health care professionals and advice on issues that affect people with scoliosis magazine and I feel like this magazine can help people who are struggling with body image and and who don’t really know anything about it http://www.sauk.org.uk/supporting-you/backbone-magazine There's also a facebook page that the charity created and the page shows other people’s stories and how they dealt with it and they also advertise events and meet ups to bring people together and help fundraise https://www.facebook.com/ScoliosisAssociationUK/photos/a.281106231934502.73719.208182629226863/1578245288887250/?type=3&hc_ref=PAG ES_TIMELINE

Poster Research I researched some posters to get an idea and inspiration of what I want my poster to look like, I mostly got these poster images from The Scoliosis Association website http://www.sauk.org.uk/
