-"Marijuana“ guided notes -The Truth about Medicinal Marijuana Today's Agenda -MYTH OR FACT -"Marijuana“ guided notes -The Truth about Medicinal Marijuana -Journal Reflection

What have you heard about Marijuana? Where did you hear it?

The Facts Highest number of car accidents and death due to accidents are due to marijuana use (16.6% versus 2.2% alcohol use) 18% of students who regularly use have a D or lower grade point average. The 2nd leading cause of MA teens to enter drug treatment facilities is for marijuana use Marijuana is still a controlled schedule 1 substance. THC is a fat soluble drug leaving remnants for 3+ days in the body depending on frequency of use.

Marijuana: Aunt Mary, Boom, Chronic, Dope, Gangster, Grass, Hash, Herb, Mary Jane, Pot, Reefer, Skunk, Weed buds and leaves of the cannabis sativa plant most commonly abused illicit drug in the US contains more than 400 chemicals THC: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol main psychoactive chemical STUDIES SHOW marijuana contains the same cancer-causing chemicals as cigarettes

How does it work? THC acts upon certain centers of the brain. (areas that have a high density of cannabinoid receptors). It is stored in the body where there are a high number of fat cells (brain, liver, reproductive organs). Ones marijuana enters the system THC quickly finds its way from the lungs (smoked) or the stomach (eaten) and into the bloodstream traveling to other organs.

I’ll just try it once https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeF6rFN9org

marijuana can act as a : depressant (calming, sleepy) stimulant (raises blood pressure/heart rate),  narcotic (pain relief, euphoria),  psychoactive psychedelic (though not a hallucinogen by definition)

Marijuana:Effects short term memory loss effects motor coordination trouble problem solving increases heart rate increases anxiety levels distorted perception (taste, time, sounds) dry mouth/throat respiratory complications Study by Duke University shows that using before 18 lowers one’s I.Q 8 to 10 points.

Amazing Brain Facts The human brain weighs about 3lbs. Contains 100 billion neurons Full of nerve cells -no pain receptors A message from brain to muscles - 250 mph If you ironed out all the wrinkles, it would have an area of about 2 1/2 square feet It feels like soft butter The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body and vice versa

The Human Brain Brain Stem – basic things to live Cerebral Cortex – thinking, perceiving, understanding language Cerebellum – movement and balance Limbic System – learning, memory, and emotions

Teen’s Brain Development and Use Using drugs or alcohol during times of critical brain development may cause permanent changes in the way the brain works Drugs are chemicals Tap into communication system Interfere with the way nerve cells normally receive and process info Let’s look at how alcohol and drugs affect a person’s brain

Look at the chart below and say the COLOR of the word, not the word itself.

Marijuana and Memory Marijuana causes a disruption in the normal functioning of an area of the brain called the hippocampus, which controls memory formation Marijuana interferes with our ability to form new memories The following activity will help demonstrate how this happens

How many can you remember? Partner Chimp Suspenders Chalk Ice T.V. Mug Wallet Donkey Folder Rock SpongeBob Sun Glitter Cheesecake

Marijuana: Effects of Long Term Use People who use marijuana long-term report: less life satisfaction poorer education lower job achievement more interpersonal problems Young users are at higher risk for psychosis lose contact with reality delusions hallucinations

Marijuana: How is it abused? users roll loose marijuana into a cigarette called a “joint” can be smoked in a water pipe, called a “bong” mixed into food has appeared in cigars called “blunts” Studies show that someone who smokes 5 joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day

few people begin using illicit drugs without using Marijuana first Studies show few people begin using illicit drugs without using Marijuana first For example, the risk of using cocaine is much greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never tried it. Using marijuana puts children and teens in contact with people who use and sell other drugs. So, a person who uses marijuana is more likely to be exposed to and urged to try other drugs. The effects of marijuana on the brain of adolescents—still a work in progress—may also affect their likelihood of using other drugs as they get older

What about 'medical marijuana' ? since 1970: marijuana has been a Schedule I. controlled substance meaning it has high potential for abuse and no approved medical use it is illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate CBD – chemical found in marijuana that is used as a pain reliever. However.... Marinol and Sativex (legal form of marijuana's active ingredient THC) -KIND OF LIKE- Morphine (legal form of opiate drugs' active ingredient)

THE TRUTH ABOUT MEDICAL MARIJUANA
