Rural to Urban Varying Immigrant Experiences Noah Austin and Janna Wildermuth

Rural to Urban Migration The United States was moving towards industrialization from agriculture.

Urbanization By 1920 a majority of the US population lived in cities This opened new economic activities for women, international and internal migrants Urbanization Additionally: In 1917, Puerto Ricans were granted citizenship

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire - Occurred on March 25, 1911 - Owners had locked exits to prevent workers from taking breaks - Most victims were young Italian and Jewish immigrants - Led to increased labor organization and legislation of improved factory standards It seems that Blanck and Harris deliberately torched their workplaces before business hours in order to collect on the large fire-insurance policies they purchased, a not uncommon practice in the early 20th century. While this was not the cause of the 1911 fire, it contributed to the tragedy, as Blanck and Harris refused to install sprinkler systems and take other safety measures in case they needed to burn down their shops again.

Varying Migrant Experiences Economic pressures, global events, and political developments caused changes in the numbers, sources, and experiences of migrants.

WWI Labor and Migration The War Industries Board and The National War Labor Board -tried to stop strikes during the war -controlled workers to maintain war production The war caused a greater need for factory workers, pushing people to the cities

The Dust Bowl Occurred from 1934-40 Soil erosion caused by converting grassland to cropland - increased susceptibility to windstorms Caused extensive migration to California "Grapes of Wrath" connects to this

African American Migration The Great Migration (1916-1970) - 6 million African Americans moved from the South to the North Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (1914) - Black nationalist organization "Birth of a Nation" by D. W. Griffith - Revival of the KKK Red Summer (1919) - Race riots in Detroit, Tulsa, and Chicago
