Intergenerational SRTS Engage Boomers Kristine Schindler Coordinator, Intergenerational Program RCHSD

Center for Healthier Communities Director Cheri Fidler, Population Health focus. Community facing CHC

Engage Boomers Who? Why? How? “When the wisdom of age is mixed with the energy of youth, it creates a powerful combination that benefits everyone.” -Donna Butts, Executive Director Generations United Who and Why provided by Brynn and Jennifer in their presentation. 41M 65 or above. 72M baby boomers. My focus – How?

Engagement – Testimonials & Photo Evidence Yvonne “I made a decision to volunteer to help keep our children safe when they are walking to school and/or crossing the street. I enjoy being the "eyes on the street" and teaching children how important it is to use the crosswalks and to be alert so they don't get hurt. It is such an honor and a privilege to be able to do this because as a 65-year-old retired widow I get to go out and mingle in our community, meet some of the neighbors, and participate in the Walking School Bus events. Walk On.....Safely” First though, a testimonial to share. Yvonne – Grandma to Ethan at Juarez Elementary

IG Program Locations Start of IG program activities Jan 2015. 3 schools then expanded to 5. Mention City Heights too, though not a designated IG grant location. Always THINK IG !!!

Pilot Program – Establish SRTS + IG Engagement Goal – Engage Seniors Determine Feasibility Walk Audit Outreach to Seniors Create Opportunities to Engage Provide Support and Tools Adopt A School Idea Ask EVERYONE !! Adapt as You Go Track Seniors Involved Create opportunities to engage, e.g., visual scavenger hunt during WSB. Special tools e.g., seat canes, umbrellas

Recruitment – Ask Everyone !! Individual recruitment vs. group. Best group engagement to date – SDPD RSVP Members Ask everyone AGAIN Elders Living in Their Element

↑ Students & Seniors Overall Health And Well-being How to Engage ↑ Number of Students Biking/Walking to School Safely ↓Traffic Congestion Around Schools ↑ Students & Seniors Overall Health And Well-being Walk Audit Special Events Reading in the Classroom Encouragement Events, e.g. Walk, Ride, and Roll to School Days Community Safety Patrol Training and Activities Walking School Buses Track Seniors Involved Let’s Walk to School activity books, multiple walk audits – first, parent, student, helmet and umbrella giveaways

Engagement – How Are We Doing? To date, a total of over 40 unique RSVP members have engaged with our SRTS activities in 4 SDPD divisions (Eastern, Mid-City, Central, and Traffic). A number of these members have engaged with us multiple times and in multiple ways. Goals meet and work continues…. > 50 yo shown here is unduplicated, so number is even higher !!!

Improve As You Go Create 1:1 pairings when possible Support your IG volunteers well – consider special needs and appreciate them directly and personally Search for best match Reading in classrooms Walking School Buses Helmet giveaways Ask for feedback and tweak as you go… Many, many lessons learned. Just sharing a few here.

Engagement – Testimonials & Photo Evidence Joanne “Personally, my participation has been most rewarding.  Everyone has an active life to lead, plenty of responsibilities, and limited time to accomplish everything.  Even so, giving a small amount of time to help children understand the benefits of walking and instill in them safety measures will result in healthier and better educated children for the future.”

RSVP Member Engagement – THANK YOU !!!!
