MEET THE TEACHER September 14, 2018 Welcome to Mr MEET THE TEACHER September 14, 2018 Welcome to Mr. Hartman’s First Grade Classroom 2013 Dan Hartman

Meet the teacher… I have lived within the boundaries of the Hamburg Area School District for my entire life, and as such, graduated from the district. I then attended Penn State Berks Campus for Elementary Education. Since graduation I have worked within the Hamburg District, beginning as a building substitute . I then taught Kindergarten for one year and Second Grade for two years. This is my fifth year teaching first grade. Outside of school I have many different interests and hobbies. I enjoy spending time with my wife, my son, our two french bulldogs, and our extended family. I also like to spend as much time as possible in the outdoors: hiking, camping, hunting, canoeing, fishing, and utilizing digital photography. Ever since I was in kindergarten I have enjoyed everything about dinosaurs.

Home - School Communication Send all notes for me to school in your child’s “Take- Home / Homework Folder” which should be brought to school every day in your child’s backpack. Please check your child’s folder daily to ensure you receive all communications from me. You may visit my teacher homepage on the school district’s website: www.hasdhawks.org You may email me providing you do not need an immediate response, as I check my email only once a day. My email address is danhar@hasdhawks.org

Items Needed for School A backpack large enough to hold a folder—The backpack must be brought to and from school every day. The “Take- Home / Homework Folder” your child receives should be returned to school every day in his/her backpack. 6 or more Elmer’s® glue sticks—Parents will be asked to supply their child with glue sticks for this school year. Please send a pack containing six or more Elmer’s® glue sticks to school with your child as soon as possible. If additional glue sticks are necessary later in the school year, I will send a note home with your child. A box of tissues to share with the class Please do not send other school supplies (pencils, crayons, etc.) that have not been requested by the teacher.

Math: Envisions Students will participate in daily large group lessons. Students will participate in small group lessons based upon any student needs for extra help.

Math Homework Students will receive homework each night. This will generally be a front and a backside of a paper, about 8 problems. Please complete this every night.

READING: Fundations and Wonders Programs and Homework Students participate in daily large-group language arts lessons. In addition, students practice skills at their own level during small-group guided reading lessons. Reading groups are based upon ability and are flexible to accommodate students’ changing needs.

Reading Homework Reading Homework will be in two parts: Spelling Words and High Frequency Word Practice For each week, students will receive a paper with both sets of words on it. This will be kept in the back pocket of their red folder. The sheet does NOT need to be signed. Reading Story Each student will receive a storybook to read aloud each night. This book will most likely, but not always, be the same book we are using in group. The books will come home in a manila folder which should be signed each night. This will show me that you have completed both parts of the reading homework.

Homework & Grading Policy Will be assigned Monday to Friday, with assignments on weekends. Some will be collected while others will be checked by walking around the room. GOAL: Reinforce newly learned skills, review work done in class, prepare for tests and quizzes, and develop responsible academic habits.

What Can You Do? Read with your child every night Correct fact-practice in math and go over flashcards as needed Empty the “Keep” side of the Homework Folder each night and monitor the “Return “side Provide a consistent homework routine in a quiet environment.

Report Cards and Conferences Report cards are issued 4 times per year, after each marking period. November conferences are tentatively scheduled for the 23rd and 24th. Please save the dates! It is important I meet with you to discuss your child’s progress. Conferences during other conference periods are at the request of the teacher and or parent. Please call or request a conference at any time if you have concerns or questions.

Classroom Rules Be Kind Be Safe Be Your Best

Behavior Monitoring Positive reinforcement is used daily to encourage students to follow rules, to act and speak with kindness and respect, and to use good manners. A – Always follow directions from staff. W – Walk in a straight quiet line in the hall. K – Keep hands, feet, and objects within your personal space. S – Speak to others using kind words and actions.

Parents may be notified with a phone call or note home. Red Light—After several reminders, the student continues to have difficulty following one or more rules. Five or more minutes of recess are lost. Yellow Light—Warning!! The student has been given a verbal warning but continues to have difficulty following one or more rules. No privileges are lost.
