“Earthquake centered in Delaware shakes Philadelphia region”

A rare earthquake jolted the Philadelphia region on Thursday evening, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 4.1 magnitude quake struck just after 4:45 p.m., and was centered about 6 miles east-northeast of Dover, Delaware. People from as far away as Washington and New York City reported that they felt the movement. One expert told Action News that while earthquakes here are uncommon, they are always possible. "They are somewhat random events here on the East Coast because we're not near some of the more active plate boundaries where we tend to find earthquakes. But... the Earth is always under constant stress and after so many years that pressure builds up and has to be released, and it's usually in the form of an earthquake," said a Delaware State Geologist. It was back in August, 2011 when our area last felt the impact of a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia.

At least 42 people were injured and several homes destroyed, officials say. The epicenter of the quake was located about 36 miles northeast of the city of Kerman in a sparsely populated area of the country. The depth of the quake, at only 6 miles, was likely to intensify the effects. "The quake destroyed some houses in eight villages but so far there has been no fatalities," a local official told state TV, according to Reuters.
