The Renaissance 1300-1600

Remember… What were the 3 effects of the Crusades? Trade increased (towns developed) King’s authority/power increased (monarchies developed) **Interest in learning increased ** (**This sparked a wave of changes throughout Europe.)

In the 1300”s, scholars in Western Europe became interested in … Classical Writings = the writings of the ancient Greeks and Romans AND 2. The Greek and Roman idea of the importance of people = humanism *Renaissance means rebirth. (What was reborn?)

** During the Renaissance, people became less concerned with the mysteries of religion and more interested in the world around them.

The leading center of the Renaissance was Italy. Florence, Venice, and the Papal States *these city-states were wealthy because of trade.

The leaders of these city-states wanted to be remembered as wise and generous rulers. They used their wealth to encourage learning and to support the arts These wealthy merchants who supported the arts were called patrons. A patron supplied the artist with all the supplies, a studio to work in, lessons, a place to live and even food.

Because of the generosity of patrons, art became an important part of life in Renaissance Italy. A famous Italian patron was - Lorenzo de Medici “Lorenzo the Magnificent” from Florence.

Elizabethan England Queen Elizabeth I : She was clever and well - educated. *Good qualities for a monarch Traveled throughout the kingdom. *People knew her. Poets & writers praised her. *poetry, music, & theater became an important part of Elizabethan England.

Plays were often performed on open air stages. If you couldn’t afford to pay for a seat, you stood in the “pit” and you were called a Groundling!

An Important Invention of the Renaissance THINK! How were books produced during the Middle Ages? (who, where, how) Copied by hand by scribes in the scriptorium of a monastery. This took a long time and was expensive, making it difficult for people to have books.

In 1440, a German inventor named Johannes Gutenberg developed the Printing Press

** Books could be made quickly by machine compared to copying slowly by hand. AS A RESULT, more books were available. BECAUSE books came at a time when more people were learning to read and think for themselves, new ideas spread rapidly.
