African-Americans in the Civil War I. The North and South had a different idea on the role of African-Americans in the Civil War.

The North A. Thousands of free blacks volunteer to fight for the North. But there's a problem…

The North A. It was against the law for African-Americans to serve in the military.

The North B. Congress will act to repeal* the law in 1862.

The North Who joins? C. Free African-Americans and escaped slaves

Problems for African-Americans in the North. Troops would be assigned to all black units. AND receive half the pay

The North B. In total, 200,000 African-Americans fight. Nearly 40,000 will die.

54th Massachusetts C. Would help win respect for African-American troops.

African-Americans in the South. A.The Emancipation-Proclamation would declare slaves free in the Confederate States. But….

The South B. Many were still forced to work on plantations. The slaves would slow down their work.

The South C. Others were to keep working as domestic servants.

The South D. African-Americans will be allowed to fight for the South at the end of the war.

Women in the War

Women II. Women in the war. A. Women in the North and South took over jobs men did before war.

Women What would women do in the war? Work as nurses, work in factories, even dress like men so they could fight!

Women-nurses B. Brave women would serve during battle to take care of wounded soldiers.

Women-soldiers C. Women would dress as men and fight. D. How many? Over 400 women

Women Were represented in all three branches of the army- infantry, artillery, and cavalry
