Sources of Wisdom and Authority (Life of Muhammad) 6 – Significance of the Night Journey and Hijrah

Evaluate the significance of the Night Journey and the Hijrah to Islam (30) You are going to be writing this essay this lesson. You may not use your plan to help you to start with, but you do have 5 minutes to revise. I’m going to give you 45 minutes to write the essay (longer than you would get in the exam), but at the half-way point I’ll allow you to refer to your plan.

Evaluate the significance of the Night Journey and the Hijrah to Islam (30) Introduction: Define key terms. Implications of the question. Scholar information(/quotes). Conclusion signposts. Most of you 5 AO1 marks should be gained in the introduction, which means you should not be describing/defining/including narrative in the main body of your essay.

Evaluate whether the Night Journey or the Hijrah is most significant to Islam (30) Main body: Point - mentioning a scholar/quote if applicable. Explanation – give reasons/examples/quotes, making sure they’re linked to the question. Respond – give a counter-argument/other point of view Evaluate – which is the strongest argument? Why? (Give further reasons/examples to support) Link back to the question, ensure you’ve answered it.

Evaluate whether the Night Journey or the Hijrah is most significant to Islam (30) Conclusion: Reference – refer back to the signpost from your introduction, refer back to the question itself. Judgement – Make your final decision, establish clear links/definitive answers. Make sure you use clear and evaluative language.
