Healthy & Effective communication as we discuss these issues remember… Voice: make sure your tone and volume are appropriate Body language: Pay attention that your body language is open, not defensive. Timing: Ask: is this a good time to talk? Approach: check yourself: Are you attacking or angry? Being clear: Stay on the current issue. listen: Let the other person share their ideas. don’t talk over others.

Polls show that Young people today are more accepting of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Do you think that is true? Why or why not?

Today we are talking about Sexual orientation and gender identity What does it mean to be Straight, lesbian, Gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)? Biological sex Gender identity Sexual orientation sexual behavior you will receive a definition, Find a partner, discuss and tape the definition under the appropriate description

Terms to understand Biological sex - Based on genitals & chromosomes Gender identity - determined by person’s feeling about whether they are a guy, girl, both or neither Sexual orientation - Based on who a person is romantically attracted to sexual behavior - Describes what someone does sexually

LGBTQ Community acceptance of sexual orientation and gender identity affects the mental health and personal safety of LGBT individuals.  3 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY suicide is one of the leading causes of death. LGBTQ youth are 4 times more likely and questioning youth are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide,  Early intervention, comprehensive treatment and family support are the key to helping LGBTQ youth Deal with a mental health condition.
