Welding Band Saw Blades Blade stock is frequently supplied in rolls, measured, cut, and the ends welded to form an endless band. Most band machines are equipped with a band welding attachment. They may also be separate pieces of equipment. The band welder is a resistance-type butt welder. Fig. G-76 Band blade welder.

Preparing the Blade for Welding The first step is to cut the required length of blade stock for the band machine that you are using. Blade length for two-wheel sawing machines can be calculated by the formula:

Preparing the Blade for Welding PREPARE TO USE THE VERTICAL BAND MACHINE Preparing the Blade for Welding After cutting required length, grind the blade ends so they are square when positioned in the welder. Place the ends of the blade together so the teeth oppose. Proper grinding of the blade ends permits correct tooth spacing to be maintained. Preparing the Blade for Welding PREPARE TO USE THE VERTICAL BAND MACHINE Preparing the Blade for Welding A certain amount of blade material is consumed in the welding process, so the blade must be ground correctly if tooth spacing is to be maintained. Fig. G-80 The amount of blade lost in welding.

Preparing the Blade for Welding PREPARE TO USE THE VERTICAL BAND MACHINE Preparing the Blade for Welding Practice end grinding & welding scrap blades until you are familiar with the proper procedure. Make sure the jaws of the blade welder are clean. Position the blade ends in the welder jaws. Blade ends must contact squarely in the center of the gap between the welder jaws. Be sure that the blade ends are not offset or overlapped. Tighten the blade clamps.

tab SAFETY FIRST Adjust the welder for the proper width of blade. Wear eye protection and stand to one side of the welder during the welding operation. A flash with a shower of sparks will occur. The blade ends were heated to forging temperature by a flow of electric current, and the molten ends of the blades were pushed together, forming a solid joint.

tab SAFETY FIRST Loosen the blade clamps before releasing the weld lever, to prevent scoring of the welder jaws by the now-welded band. Tooth spacing across the weld should be the same as on the rest of the band. On correctly welded band the weld flash will be evenly distributed across the weld zone.

Annealing the Weld PREPARE TO USE THE VERTICAL BAND MACHINE Metal in the weld zone is hard & brittle after welding, and the weld must be annealed, or softened for the band to function It is good practice to temper the blade weld further after grinding to eliminate any hardness induced during the grinding operation.

Grinding the Weld PREPARE TO USE THE VERTICAL BAND MACHINE Be careful not to grind the teeth when grinding a band weld, as this will destroy the tooth set. Grind the band weld evenly on both sides. The weld should be ground to the same thickness as the rest of the band. If the weld area is ground thinner, the band will be weakened at that point.

Installing and Adjusting Band Guides Band guides must be properly installed if the band machine is to cut accurately and damage to the band is to be prevented. The band must be fully supported except for the teeth, using the correct width guides for the band.

Review How many blade guides are found on the vertical band saw? When and why must the band guides be changed? Calculate the required band length for a saw with two 24” dia. wheels with a center to center distance of 30”. How must the blade material be held when grinding ends? What must be done to the blade after welding to reduce brittleness?
