CHAPTER 9 Induction

Induction A systematic organizational effort to assist personnel to adjust readily and effectively to new assignments so that they can contribute maximally to work while realizing personnel and position satisfaction. To assist managers /leaders in ensuring that new employees, volunteers and contractors have a smooth transition in the organization and their roles.

Induction (orientation) Orientation typically includes information on employee benefits, HR policies, the daily routine, company operations, safety regulations, as well as a tour of the company. Successful orientation outcomes: - New employee should feel welcome. - Understand the company policies. - Should know what is expected in work and behavior undertakings.

The Problems of a new comer Uninformed about organizational objectives, specific duties and responsibilities, organizational and community traditions and taboos, and personal and position standards. People change with behavior when they become members of groups. Lack of supervisory induction skills, inappropriate of first assignment, absence of feedback regarding early performance.

Cont’d … The need for respect, liking, belonging, a sense of competence, difficulties in classroom management and discipline. Unknown expectations, and the ability to plan and prepare for teaching (for teachers).

Induction Process To facilitate adjustment of new personnel to work environment in which they render service to the system. To provide information not fully covered during recruitment and selection process.

Knowledge From Induction Process Turnover occurs primarily during early period of employment. Turnover creates hostility and resistance within the system if the authority make replacement of positions through a force of change. The ‘change’ process affects group stability and relationships.

Poor induction had caused anxiety, discouragement, defensive behavior. Contd.. Poor induction had caused anxiety, discouragement, defensive behavior. Insecurity, belonging, esteem, and information problems can be minimized during induction period. Frustrations developed when newly appointed personnel were inconsistent between realities of organizational life later on.

Behavior & Induction Process … The organization gathers information about newcomers relative to position-related behavior which are acceptable. Induction process gathers information on performance deficiencies (incomplete, lacking, threat, weakness) and correct them through management-by-objectives (MBO) towards goals.
