Turning Your Research Into Publications Ioana Banicescu Department of Computer Science and Engineering Mississippi State University

Overview Identifying areas and factors Factors that improve publication record Steps to improving publication record Publishing pointers Publishing results of an ongoing study Q & A

Identifying Areas and Factors Quality vs. quantity Consider a large number of factors Strong research: Science & engineering Fundamental vs. multidisciplinary Education (evaluating learning): How material is absorbed, rate of knowledge dissemination, rate of making connections between, different topics studied, impact short/long of material studied

Factors that Improve your Publication Record Strong research program (establish goals) Self Collaborators: faculty, researchers (natural, suitable, competent) Maintain funding (choose appropriate) Grants: research vs. contracts Assess how this can take you to your goal (accomplish research, publications) Need good students (show then the reason to develop publications and ways to accomplish that)

Steps to Improve Your Publication Record Strong research program Plan (goals, objectives; NSF CAREER, etc) Start implementing the plan Evaluate every few months whether you are on target or you need to change a bit the short term goals or objectives Exposure of your research program Invited talks, presentations, publications Publish

Publishing Pointers Plan (refereed conferences, journals) Write "honest and strong/ambitious papers": Reviewers are your peers not - don't get discouraged! Established reviewers "impressed" by good work presented in a conference, may invite authors for improvement or their papers and submission to publication into journals of which they are editors or guest editors.

Publishing Pointers (cont’d) Be persistent! You are "committed" to achieve your research goal your must "convince" your peers of the value of your research results (intellectual merit, broader impact) "know your research community" Send your work to be reviewed by a research community in "that area", to get most of the benefits from critical reviews of experts in that area.

Publishing results of an ongoing study Theoretical aspects (modeling and analysis) Eval. impact on problem of practical aspect You need applications (collaborative work) Qualitative and quantitative aspects Integrate your new method, procedure, technique, algorithm into the existing technology and prove its benefits Find open problems from questions raising from the work you just have accomplished (or follow-up concepts) and continue.
