TED TALK https://www.ted.com/talks/clint_smith_the_d anger_of_silence?language=en

The Danger of Silence Let’s Discuss: How did using the quote from Martin Luther King, Jr. play a role in Clint Smith’s speech?

What does he mean by this? The Danger of Silence Let’s discuss: In his speech, Clint mentions the core principles he posts for his students. He pays particular attention to the last one, “Tell your truth”. What does he mean by this? How does he tell his truth at the end of the speech?

The Danger of Silence “Silence is the residue of fear. It is feeling your flaws, gut-wrench guillotine your tongue. It is the air retreating from your chest because it doesn’t feel safe in your lungs. Silence is Rwandan genocide. Silence is Katrina. It is what you hear when there aren’t enough body bags left. It is the sound after the noose is already tied. It is charring. It is chains. It is privilege. It is pain. There is no time to pick your battles when your battles have already picked you.” What do you notice about the excerpt? Should notice repetition, mainly. Touch on the tone the paragraph takes because the next assignment will be to flip it and make it positive and about courage, using the same format.

The Power of Courage YOUR TURN! Courage is Continue in your writer’s notebook. Use Clint Smith’s speech as a guide for your writing.

ARTICLE GROUP PROJECT Each group will receive a different article. Each member of the group will read and annotate their article silently. After reading the article, each member of the group will write an objective summary about their article.

OBJECTIVE SUMMARY Your summary should do the following things: What is the article about? In what situation are they discussing silence? According to the article, is silence dangerous in this situation? How does your group feel about these claims?

AFTER THE SUMMARY Once everyone has written their summary, each member will share their summary with their group members. The group members will work together to decide who wrote the best summary. Then the group will present the best summary to the class.

SUMMARY PRESENTATIONS The presenters are to present their summary and discuss how silence is discussed in their article. In what situation are they discussing silence?
