The Respiratory System Lesson 2, Chapter 8

You Need Oxygen to Live! The body needs oxygen to work properly Oxygen helps you perform all kinds of activities (sports, music, etc) How does oxygen get into your body? How does oxygen get to your cells? It travels through your Respiratory System! Respiratory System: the organs that supply your blood with oxygen.

Parts of Your Respiratory System The main parts of your respiratory system include the mouth and nose, the trachea, the lungs, and the diaphragm. Air enters your body through your nose and mouth. Cilia line the inside of your nose. These tiny, hair-like structures trap dirt and particles from the air you inhale before it travels to other parts of your respiratory system.

Parts of Your Respiratory System Trachea: a passageway in your throat that takes air into and out of your lungs. Epiglottis: a flap of tissue in the back of your mouth that keeps food out of your trachea. Bronchi: Two passageways that branch from the trachea, one to each lung. Lungs: Two large organs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Diaphragm: a large, dome-shaped muscle below the lungs that expands and compresses the lungs, enabling breathing

Parts of Your Respiratory System

The Breathing Process Three processes happen in your body when you breathe. You inhale. The diaphragm moves down and your chest expands, letting air into your lungs Oxygen from the air passes out of your lungs and into your blood. At the same time, the oxygen replaces carbon dioxide You exhale. Your diaphragm pushes up, forcing air and carbon dioxide out of your lungs

Diseases and Disorders of the Respiratory System Asthma Cold/Flu Emphysema Lung Cancer Mouth and Tongue Cancer Pneumonia Tuberculosis

Tips for Taking Care of Your Respiratory System Avoid tobacco use Stay away from people who smoke. Don’t go to places where the air is smoky. Take care of your body when you have a cold, flu, or any other illness. Drink plenty of water. Take deep, full breaths often. Eat a healthy diet Get outside and breathe fresh air. Be physically active Pay attention to any allergy alerts
