Horror genre By Kevin Maxwell

Origins of horror The horror film can be traced right back to 1896 with  Georges Méliès (Le Manoir du diable) translated from French to the devils mansion. Horror genre is a large genre and to analyse as horror can be split into a vast amount of sub genres like slasher horror, zombie horror, monster horror, supernatural horror and sci-fi horror to name a few Horror films through time carry a few similar trends in regards to capturing a audience with in a situation by engulfing the audience in a trance like state of fear were as other people enjoy the thrill and adrenaline rush with the anticipation. Horror films tend to range from very large budget films(blockbusters) to independent films with a low to no budget, but with the low budget films focusing on the story development to capture the audience, were as a larger budget film (blockbuster) having a vast amount of money usually have the resources to have a more glossier visually captivating effects, prosthetics.

Horror defined To get a grasp of horror as a genre you need to look at the definition of genre as a whole “Horror film is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm, and dread for the audience. ” One quote in particular from Steven king makes you think why people love horror films so much “We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.”

Conventions LOCATIONS Location – generally used to isolate characters within horror movies for example abandoned house, in the woods, ghost town. The location of a horror is critical for creating the first perception of the film for example if shot shows a wood and looks normal then as the sun goes down it begins to look allot creepier and is a good signifier for setting a atmosphere

convEntions PLOTS Characters usually tend to forget about the threat of danger/ death curse. Situations in horror films tend to have the power lines and phone lines cut when trying to create the feeling of impending doom with no possibility of help coming this was more common back in the 80s slasher/ supernatural horrors Then there is the person who goes to investigate a strange noise and usually ends up going missing and when people search for them its usually then that they have been killed You also have the person who run past a open door to go up stairs to hide in a locked safe area instead of going outside and escaping

Georges Méliès Le Manoir Du Diable Le Manoir Du Diable translated to the devils mansion George melies had created allot of spectacular movies but the devils mansion was classed as the first ever horror movie because it has many key elements to modern day horror movies The main character of this has similar features too a vampire who also used magic and shape shifting abilities, as well as having mystical creatures/ monsters in the movie

The devils mansion The title of the movie is the devils mansion this is shot in one location/ room as the equipment at the time was very heavy and not easy to move around but it helped the melies worked it theatres and used the theatres as the locations for his movies Here is the devils mansion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGKz-JYRmXo

The Exorcist (1973 The Exorcist was directed by William Friedkin William Friedkin has work on and directed a few movies throughout his career and directed many more Television shows This movie is based on a true story about a teenage girl who gets possessed by a mysterious entity and the mother seeks out help from the Catholic Church The exorcist has elements within which Tie in with spiritual, supernatural, Sub genres but also has murder involved

the exorcist 1973 Just to show the supernatural elements, camera angles and lighting i am going to show a few short clips form the movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAVcYYTVJTY

The conjuring This is a more modern and up to date version the horror movie genre The conjuring was directed by James wan who also produced allot of other horror movies like saw Annabel and furious 7 The conjuring is also based on a true story just like the exorcist and can be defined not just into horror alone but as a sub genre of supernatural suspense horror
