Computing Year 7 - Unit 2 Programming Basics Types of Software

Today’s Objectives 1 Recall where software fits into our way of looking at computers in layers 2 Know what we mean by the words software, program and instruction 3 Know the two types of software 4 Be able to identify examples Practical Tasks: Make some basic programs

Looking at Computers in Layers Remember that we started out looking at computers in layers It’s a simpler way to understand these complex machines Let’s remind ourselves about that But this time, look carefully at where software fits in...

Computers in Layers

Types of Software – Basic Ideas Computers follow instructions given to them by humans A list of these instructions is called a program Without a program to tell it what to do, a computer would just be a useless collection of hardware Software is the name given to all these programs and the information they use

There are two types of software: Systems Software: Means the special programs that run and manage the computer so all the parts work together. Applications software: Means all the other programs we use for work and play, such as on a PC, a tablet or a smartphone.

Quick Challenge Can you tell one types of software from another? Let’s look at some examples...
