Iroquois Confederacy By Melissa Fish

Family Life Cayuga men were in charge of hunting, trading, and war. The mothers were the heads of the clan. Story telling. Women took care of the crops and the men hunted.

Food (Hunting and Gathering) Vegetables fruits and nuts, and many different kinds of meat and fish. Corn, beans and squash were the main vegetables. Some meat was dried and stored in clay pots or in pits lined with animal skins.

Clothing They wore deer skins that the women had tanned, cut and sewed. Everybodies clothing was handmade. Women wore long skirts that reached almost to their ankles with leggings under their skirts.

Weapons/Tools Cayuga hunters used bows and arrows. Cayuga fishermen used spears and fishing poles with bone hooks. In war, Cayuga men used their bows and arrows or fought with heavy war clubs and shields.

Houses Here are some pictures of longhouses like the ones Cayuga Indians used. Each one was home to an entire clan (up to 60 people) Which are large wood frame buildings covered with sheets of elm bark.

Fun and Games One of the many games that help boys to prepare the skills necessary to hunt or fish. Here in this clearing one boy rolls the hoop quickly across the ground. They played lacrosse.
