The Story of Dragon-boat Festival Ms Jessica Ho & Ms Elaine Wong North Point Government Primary School (Hong Kong)

Once upon a time there was a man called Qu Yuen. He was a good man but the emperor did not listen to him. He threw himself into the river.

The people were very sad. They did not want the fish to eat Qu Yuen’s body.

They rowed dragon boats on the river. The loud noise drove the fish away.

People also threw rice dumplings to feed the fish. The fish ate the rice dumplings. They did not eat Qu Yuen’s body.

People commemorate Qu Yuen. We still have dragon boat races now.

We do not throw rice dumplings into the river. We eat them instead.
