Public Speaking: Tips & Techniques

Public speaking overview: Objectives -identify the five reasons that people fear public speaking - diagram the speech planning process - identify and describe ways to improve public speaking skills - contrast controllable versus non-controllable factors of public speaking

Fear of Public Speaking “According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” Jerry Seinfeld

Public Speaking Anxiety 4 TIMES P.S. Anxiety shows up: - Pre-preparation Anxiety – Can’t get started - Preparation Anxiety – During research and preparation - Pre-performance Anxiety – 24 hours before a presentation - Performance Anxiety – During the actual presentation **75% of people suffer from fear/anxiety about speaking in public.

Why Do We Hate Public Speaking? Question: Why do YOU think people HATE public speaking? Lack of Positive Experience Being the Center of Attention Feelings of Isolation Being Judged by an Audience Fear of Failure 5 Major Causes of Public Speaking Anxiety

1. Lack of Positive Experience We tend to remember moving feelings and emotions more than everyday ones. How many times have you attempted public speaking?(Please share w/ neighbor) Reflect on these experiences - how did you prepare for each occasion? In most cases, it’s not positive experience we are lacking– just actual experience. Practice, practice, Practice!

2. Being the Center of Attention Everyone is staring at you! Why? Because you are the EXPERT on the content that you are delivering. Being comfortable comes from being confident. Being confident comes from being prepared! Eye contact is a two way street.

3. Feelings of Isolation Are you really alone? Yes…….or………No? Actually it’s BOTH. Yes- You are in total control of your presentation. No- If possible, add audience engagement. Share example Audiences want to be entertained or informed. No one asks to be bored!

4. Being Judged By An Audience You ARE being judged…. How do you judge people initially? Work backwards- How do you want to be seen? Take time to make that impression! You will know how you are perceived very quickly. Confidence is key. Knowledge = power.

Partner Activity: Use the list of characteristics/impressions to come up with scenarios in which the impression could get in the way of the message. Ex: At my faculty meeting yesterday….

5. Fear of Failure Failure helps us learn, but let’s face it, we like it to be private. PUBLIC failure feels more embarrassing. A healthy fear of failure actually helps us. What is the worst that can happen? (C’mon, let’s brainstorm) Figured it out? Now prepare to prevent. List everything that you can control and plan to manage it. Audience wants you to be successful in your goals.

How Can I Become a Better Speaker? Prepare the right way. Start by asking and answering these questions: 1. What is the specific purpose and structure of your speech? 2. What is your topic? 3. Who is your audience? 4. What are your time constraints? 5. Will you be using visual aids?

1. Purpose What are you hoping to accomplish? Are you informing? Arguing or Convincing? Your purpose will help you determine the specific STRUCTURE of your speech. Structure: Tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you told them. Make sure to have a beginning, middle, and end. Your audience should be clear, as well. Ask yourself if you are meeting audience expectations for this type of speech. Knowing time also helps you with structure because you need to pace yourself!

2. Topic Mapping techniques (bubble maps, etc) Start with structure, then pick your topic! – Topic selection – how to choose? Mapping techniques (bubble maps, etc) Start broad, work towards narrow Don’t throw out your notes – prime ground for main points and supporting material. Are there any topics/subject matter to avoid? 3. Audience To whom are you speaking? Audience demographics Size Presentation space Audience’s current knowledge of topic Diversity

ARE THERE TIME CONSTRAINTS? ALWAYS!!! 1 minute is longer than it feels, and 5 minutes is shorter than you think! How much is too much? Too little? Overinform: Cramming too much material into too short an amount of time Underinform: Overestimating how much material that you have. Memorizing – one of the WORST things you can do. Rehearse….and then rehearse again. Your speech will be ingrained in you.

5. Visual Aids Visual Aids include anything you want the audience to see OTHER than you and what is already in the space. Examples? Visual aids – need to assist, not be the star of the show. What is the best type of display to help you prove your point? What method of display is most effective to helping you achieve your goals? Will your presentation support any kind of technology? *Preparation Tips* Common negative qualities in speakers: - Nervousness (shaking, turning red) - Anxiety (healthy amount is OK) - Looking down/back of room - Staying stationary/moving too much - Speaking at varying volumes So how do you fix it? What can YOU control?

Dress and Clothing Dress code exceeds that of your audience. - First impressions matter – you are judged positively or negatively by your audience immediately. Professionalism is important. - Dress should match tone of speech. - Dress in clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.

Eye Contact - Keeps everyone invested and involved. - Two way street – not a “staring contest”. - Keeps everyone invested and involved. - Pay equal attention to everyone in the room. - Works in conjunction with head movement. - Key is finding the right speed for your comfort.

Body Language Your nonverbal communication and gestures Use gestures that feel natural, Not an “act” Be mindful of your hands at all times Movement helps – but decide how much you will move well in advance Fidgeting Distracts Audience DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK! Best way to prepare – record yourself in a similar environment

Vocal Variety Vocal variety is using your voice in more than one monotone way - Voice analysis – loud, silent, animated, steady - Language needs to be consistent - Use of pauses – become comfortable with silence - Identify and be aware of crutch words (Examples?)

(Don’t Memorize or Read It) Delivery (Don’t Memorize or Read It) - Sentence outline – Phrase outline – Keyword outline Less is more. If you bring it, you will use it. Make sure your Speaker Outline is different than your Formal Outline. Determine the “right” amount of time to rehearse. Formal Outline, Speakers Outline (smaller and smaller)

Final Pre-Performance Tips: Day/ Night before speech Good night sleep/meals Finalize your routine Avoid too much caffeine Organize visual aids, keyword outline What’s done is done - visualize success.

Performance Tips Breathing techniques, pauses Hydrate yourself properly Bring water, but be careful If you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to acknowledge it. Have visual aids in order/accessible

Post-Performance Tips Congratulate yourself for a job well done- focus FIRST on what you did well! Get objective feedback. Watch/listen to yourself 24 hours later. Make notes on how to improve in the future.
