Simple Sentence: ? Has a subject and what it did I=subject Skinny side: Sentence Structure A sentence with one clause. ? Clause=idea Example: I hate this project. Has a subject and what it did I=subject hate= what the subject did

Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own. Compound Sentence: a sentence containing two or more clauses that can stand independently. Example: My students are frustrated and students wish I had a different final. Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own.

Skinny side Complex Sentence A sentence containing one or more subordinate clauses. REMINDER: Sentence= complete thought—subject and verb. Subordinate= cannot stand alone (dependent) Example: Although I have done much work on this project, I still do not understand the point of it. Although I have done much work on this project (what?) I still do not understand the point of it. (what?) When they joined together=complex sentence

Compound/Complex Sentence A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Tip: You know it is dependent because it cannot stand alone—it needs the others. Example: This is a good project for my students, who think it is too much; I can understand how they might be frustrated.
