Forging Aluminum for Aerospace Pressure Vessels By: Cindy, Ryan, Diego, Aidan, Laura, Elizabeth Mentor: Andrew Cantrell “We have empowered our core values by taking a new spin on scaleable synergistic metallurgic management methodology. Our robust vertical solution will leverage impact across a wide spectrum of design industries and take advantage of this window of opportunity to strengthen our body of work at a cut and dry price.”

Jorgensen Forge Manufactures high-quality forgings from material grades Low alloy steels Aluminum alloys Titanium alloys Nickel base alloys. Customers include: US Navy, United Launch Alliance (ULA), and SpaceX

Our Project Determine which alloy of aluminum would be best for use in a rocket Why use Aluminum? Stain/Work Hardening Precipitation Hardening Grain Refinement Aluminum because it is strong and light Stain/work hardening:stretching past yeild point then stopping Grain refinement:aligning and reducing size of grains to make smaller. done by heating and cooling at different rates Precipitation hardening (Age Hardening): heating it up to draw out impurities in the solute that impede crystal lattice movement, making it stronger

Determining an Alloy for Rocket Conductivity Hardness It is important to be able to distinguish between alloys after their creation in order to assure the quality of the alloys. The two major traits tested are hardness and conductivity. Hardness is measured by applying a measured load to the surface of the alloy and measuring the displacement created. Conductivity is tested with a current applied to the surface of the alloy. Various alloys can be determined by their own particular conductivity and hardness.

Aluminum Alloys 1000 series is pure aluminium 2000 series is alloyed with copper 3000 series is alloyed with manganese 4000 series is alloyed with silicon 5000 series is alloyed with magnesium 6000 series is alloyed with magnesium and silicon 7000 series is alloyed with zinc 8000 series covers any other mixture not covered by the previous series
