Sherwood Parkdale Skating Club

Background Information The SPSC is a not for profit organization and are a registered club with Skate Canada under the Skate Canada PEI Section. 1 The management of the club is run by parent volunteers. 2 Our programs are run by Nationally Certified Professional Coaches and they will be teaching the instructional portion of the PreCanskate/CanSkate lesson. 3 Additional skaters you’ll see working with your children and who your child may refer to as “their coach” are our program assistants (PA’s) who assist our professional coaches. 4 PA's are skaters from our STARskate program, or qualified skaters who volunteer their time each week to help our coaches with the CanSkate sessions. 5

Coaching Team Leads Keesha Ryan: Pre-Canskate & Jumpstart Group Nana Iwamoto: Sunday Canskate Hannah Hardy: Monday Canskate Kristen MacDonald: Thursday Canskate Jessica Godfrey: Junior Group Michelle Coyle is our Coaching Director and does group lessons on our Senior Starskate and Adult Sessions Our coaches work as a team! All based on availability provide private lessons

Equipment Proper fitting skates are key .…if in doubt ask our coaches to assess Skate sharpening After approximately 10hrs of use After not being in use for a long period of time Brand new skates…need to be sharpened Figure skates or recreational skates with picks…..DO NOT take the pick off when having sharpened Clothing Dress warmly but in layers that can be easily removed Avoid snowsuits that can be cumbersome Child needs to be able to move freely CSA Approved Helmet is mandatory; face mask is recommended Mittens or gloves are mandatory (avoid fluffy/fuzzy mitts they have proven to be a safety hazard as they stick to the ice. Knee pads may be used but avoid plastic type or cover this type with sock or leg warmers HELMETS AND MITTS MUST REMAIN ON UNTIL COMPLETELY OFF THE ICE

What to expect

Pre-Canskate Canskate Our format for this Program age is play orientated. We have found that it takes 3 to 4 weeks for the skaters to get used to the idea of skating. Class size is limited to a maximum of 35 skaters with our aim of a ratio of 1:6 Skaters who complete the Pre-canskate skills will start to be taught the Canskate levels Canskate Complete series of balance, control and agility skills that will prepare skaters for any ice skating sport or recreational skating. Nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success. Designed for 90% movement so skaters learn in an active and fun group setting Lessons are given in a group format with a coach-to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning.

Achievement Records Please go to our “Links” drop down on our home page for “Quick Steps to find “Achievements Record” Hard Copy report cards are not provided; all records are kept up to date and current in your personal account under your participants achievement tab Skaters receive ribbons and badges as they complete each component of Agility, Balance and Control Each component has many skills and can take some time to complete Celebrate your child's efforts! They are doing great!
