New England Colonies

Voyage of the Mayflower The Separatists (aka Pilgrims) were persecuted by King James… decided to come to America. Pilgrim – person who goes on a religious journey 1620 – the Mayflower arrived on Massachusetts coast Called settlement Plymouth Mayflower Compact established self-govt. / majority rule. Half died during first winter. Saved by Indians, taught them how to plant native crops . Fall 1621 – first Thanksgiving in New England.

New England Development Farming was difficult and many farmers settled close together in an area. Subsistence farming – producing just enough to feed themselves and a little extra to trade in town.

English govt. passed Navigation Acts (1651): Mercantilism – economic theory, mother country supposed to profit from its colonies. English govt. passed Navigation Acts (1651): All goods carried on English ships Certain products had to be sold only to England or its colonies European imports to colonies must pass through English ports Officials were to tax any colonial goods not shipped to England

Salem Witchcraft Trials . Young girls accused others of “bewitching” them… lead to several arrests and trials. 19 people were executed. Within a few years, many admitted to making false accusations.
