I-1 and I-2 Rocks and Landforms Practice for Test

Forms when magma cools quickly on the surface of the Earth

Small grain size (extrusive igneous rock)

Forms when magma cools slowly inside the Earth

Large grain size (intrusive igneous rock)

Bubbly appearance in rocks

Vesicular

Mineral grains are flattened & line up in parallel layers

Foliated

Example of minerals found in rocks

Feldspar, Quartz, & Biotite

Rocks (sedimentary) formed when minerals precipitate from solution & solidify

Chemical

Rocks (sedimentary) formed from the remains of living things

Organic

Fragments of other rocks are compressed together

Clastic

Name the three types of rocks

Sedimentary Igneous Metamorphic

How are they formed?

Sedimentary Over a very long period of time, sediment becomes compacted and cemented into sedimentary rock. Usually, this happens as sediment is buried more and more deeply beneath new layers of sediment.

Igneous Rock When magma cools or undergoes crystallization, igneous rock is formed.

Metamorphic Rock Formed when a rock has become changed from some original rock by high temperature or pressure (usually both) The rock does not melt New minerals grow in the rock at the expense of some of the original minerals, while the rock remains solid

What is the difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rock?

Intrusive Igneous Rock Magma cools SLOWLY inside the Earth, forming rocks with LARGE crystals or grains.

Extrusive Igneous Rock Magma cools QUICKLY on the Earth’s surface forming SMALL crystals or grains.

Know all the parts of the rock cycle.

What is a contour Line?

Contour lines represent the elevation of the landscape. Also shows the steepness or gentleness of an area.

Can a contour line ever cross?

No. A single contour line represents only one elevation, therefore they do not cross.

What is the index contour line?

Index contour line is darker, shows the elevation in feet, and occurs every 4th or 5th contour line.

What is the Contour Interval? How do you find it?

A contour interval is the real life distance between each contour line. Spacing between the contour lines has noting to do with the distance between each one. Spacing only deals with steepness or gentleness.

What are some other features on a topographic map?

Color… Blue = water Green = Forest/open spaces Black = Buildings/homes
