Water Heater Repair – What to Do When You Get No Hot Water? Most people think that their water heaters will continue to perform optimally even when they do not pay any attention to proper maintenance. This is not the right thing to do, especially when you have a standard tank-type water heater installed. These water heaters utilize insulated storage tanks that can have different problems. The good thing is that you can try your own skills and fix some common issues on your own. However, if you do not make timely adjustments, things may go out of hand and require the help of a water heater repair specialist. Before you call in a pro, you may want to check a few things to deal with certain water heater issues. A common issue is to have no hot water every time you turn your water heater on. If you proceed carefully, you can certainly fix the issue on your own. There is no point in having a water heater installed when it fails to provide you with hot water whenever you require. So many things could be the root cause of the trouble. You may have a faulty thermocouple or a bad pilot. A control valve can also go bad but can be fixed if the issue is not serious. When you have a gas water heater and it is not offering hot water, be sure to check the pilot first. You have to understand that your heater will refuse to work if the pilot light has not turned on. What it means is that you may not be getting hot water because the pilot fails to ignite the gas burner. It could be the result of a number of problems. For instance, you may have a bad thermocouple. It is basically a sensor that allows the gas to reach the tip of the pilot light. The thermocouple has two ends one of which is inside the pilot burner and the other one is attached to the valve. The pilot flame procures heat that generates a small voltage and helps keep the gas valve open. If you notice any problem here, you can consider replacing the thermocouple. Here is how to replace the thermocouple:  Before you proceed with water heater repair, be sure to turn off the gas supply. You should turn it off before the gas valve and on the gas valve as well.  Find the burner compartment and remove the cover. Now, find the gas tubes and disconnect them – you should be disconnecting the tubes that lead to the burner assembly.  Now remove the burner assembly to gain access to the thermocouple. Simply replace it and then reattach the burner assembly. Connect the gas tubes and try to relight the pilot. In most cases, replacing the thermocouple will resolve the issue and help you have hot water, but if it does not work, you will be better off letting a professional help you with water heater repair.
