DEFINITION Research is a combination of the prefix re- which means again and the verb search which means to look for. Coined together it simply means to look for again. It is different from other standard essays because they draw heavily on materials gathered through research. Another definition is that it comes from your own thoughts based on your thorough analysis of what you previously knew and what you managed to search about your topic.

It is also known as systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to estalbish facts and reach new conclusions. – Google Studious inquiry or investigation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories in light oa new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories. – Merriam Webster

THESIS STATEMENT A Thesis Statement is a proposition that a person advances and offers to maintain in an argument. A short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of a research paper. It is developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence.

HOW TO DEVELOP A GOOD THESIS STATEMENT A thesis statement appears in the last part of the introductory paragraph of the research paper. The reader should know what the paper is all about. The following are fool proof ways to develop a good thesis statement. 1. Pick a topic. 2. Be specific. 3. Be arguable. 4. Create a mini-outline of the paper. 5. Choose your words wisely.

GUIDE QUESTIONS Guide questions are a big help in writing a research paper. This is because it provides a sense of direction to the researcher in terms of the contents included in the research paper. The researcher easily determines what specific topics that should be include in the paper to avoid broad and vague contents. Topics are discussed from the simplest to the most complicated ones with the help of the guide questions. Thus it saves time, effort and money in revising the draft.
