Career Pathways: Vocational ESL Trainings Presented by: Sara Nelson Treadway

VESL Trainings at PCC Food Service; levels 2/3 and up Direct Care Worker; level 3/4 and up Health Care Training; level 5/6 and up Computer Applications for Speakers of Other languages; Level 5/6 (and up) VESL Accounting Office Assistant (VESL Entry Level Accounting Clerk); level 6 and up

Schedule of Trainings Career Pathways VESL Trainings are from 12 to 17.5 hours of in-class training per week Most trainings are Monday through Friday – either with class or class and internship. All trainings have an internship requirement of an average of 6 - 12 hours per week. After training there is a mandatory job search class* for 4 to 8 weeks after training (*except with CASOL and VELAC)

What is Food Service? Food Service is a program that will teach you how to get a job in food service Hospitals Schools ALFs Restaurants

In Food Service Students Learn: Communication Safety Kitchen Organization Food Handler’s Card Cash Register Resumes Interviews

Food Service… Length of training: 10 weeks Cost of training: $2016 Placement rates: 90 – 100% Wage average: $8.50 - $14 per hour

What does a Direct Care Worker do? A Direct Care Worker helps people who are living in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) Elicit from students: “What do you need to know to work in an kitchen?”

Direct Care Worker… Length of training: 11 weeks Cost of training: $2370 Placement average: 100% Wage average: $8.50 – $11.00 per hour

Health Care… Length of training: 14 weeks Cost of training: $2875/$3161 (including books) Placement rates: 80% or more Wage average: $9.00 - $16.00 per hour

What is the CASOL Program? CASOL is a program that will teach you how to get a job in office

In CASOL you will Learn: Computers Job Preparation English Keyboarding Reading Microsoft Word Writing Interviews Microsoft Excel Communication Resumes Vocabulary Cover Letters

CASOL… Length of training: 6.5 months Cost of training: about $2000 Placement rates after training: varies Wage average: $9.00 - $16.00

VESL Entry Level Accounting Clerk VELAC is a program that will teach you how to get a job as an Accounting Clerk.

In VELAC students will learn: 1. Accounting Skills 2. Job 3. English Preparation Reading Writing Intro to Accounting Interviews Communication Resumes Computers in Business Vocabulary Cover Letters Internship Intro to Business Computerized Accounting

VELAC… Length of Training: 6 months (2 terms) Cost of training: about $2900 Placement outlook: good for both continuing education and employment in this industry Wage average: $10 - $14

What are training days like? Time Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 8:00 9:00 Internship 10:00 11:00 12:00 1:00 Training 2:00 3:00 4:00 Training will be held at PCC Southeast Center OR PCC Willow Creek; CASOL rotates between Campuses; VELAC Pilots this Winter

What is Job Search? Help finding job postings Help with applications and resumes You must attend Job Search if you do not have a job at the end of the training Elicit: “What is an internship?”

Why should students take a training? You want to learn more job specific skills in class and at an internship You want to improve your English skills and industry specific language You want to have assistance with job searching

Also… 80 - 100% of our students got jobs from Career Pathways trainings We help you apply for jobs and set up interviews You will apply for many jobs during the training

Who can take Pathways trainings? You: read, write, speak English have transportation to class and internship GED or high school diploma for most trainings (GED/Diploma preferred but not required) (Diploma from home country will work)
