FTP / TCP Overview Provides reliability, error checking, ordered packets in a stream Congestion control built in Internet could not survive without it Works well for most internet traffic, email, web browsing small ad-hoc transfers (HTTP, FTP, SFTP, SMTP etc) What is TCP. TCP has been around a really long time. TCP is the underlying protocol for most applications we use on a daily basis. Email, Browsing the web as well as FTP. TCP Powers the internet. It was built well into the 70`s and is been around since then. It has been build for sending smaller data. It has never been designed to send larger data. However it is a protocol that handles data with the focus of reliability, error checking, congestion control and making sure data is intact however not with speed in mind. So it is great for sending small amounts of data. | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2014

File Transfer Issues with TCP Flow control limits transmission window, causes dead air with high latency Very aggressive in response to network congestion, cannot tune in application layer Result is less than ideal performance on wireless, satellite, or long haul links Can be tuned but still not ideal for many-one, one-many Here is an example of how TCP works. TCP sends data in a serial process. The sender will send a small amount of data and wait for an acknowledgement of all the sent data before proceeding to send more data. This makes TCP a very chatty protocol. Chatty in the sense that there is a lot of waiting and a lot of talking but not much data transfer. Data Packet TCP is a very serial process. Each packet of data must be received before a new packet is sent = Decreased transfer speed Source File Destination File Acknowledgments 6 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2014

Acceleration with FileCatalyst Ideal for bulk file transfer Predictable - Can send at a perfect rate Not affected by latency or packet loss Congestion Control implemented in application layer Tunable congestion control aggression Instantly detect link capacity With FileCatalyst, the sender break down the file into blocks, and blocks into packets. Number each of these packets and send as many as it can on the network. Since the packets are numbered, the receiver will only request the packets that are missing opposed to acknowledging all the packets. This process eliminates the dead air on the line ensuring the entire link is maximized. During the transfer, the sender and receiver will also monitor the network for dropped packets or latency spikes. When this happens, it means that the sender is sending faster than what the link can handle. This is known as congestion. FileCatalyst has a congestion control algorithm built into the protocol to ensure over saturation is not encountered and other applications running on the same bandwidth are not starved for bandwidth. The congestion control can be tuned based on the priority of file transfers. In addition the congestion control algorithm can instantly detect the link capacity and have the transfer start at that rate. Source File Destination File FileCatalyst completely saturates the pipe by sending multiple blocks of data = Increased transfer speed Acknowledgments 7 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2014

FileCatalyst Protocol Considerations Plays fair with other traffic on network 10 Gbps file transfer, single stream. Found by independent study to be only solution to maintain 10 Gbps with high latency and packet loss. High performance for many small files Features that reduce amount of data transferred (Compression and Incremental (RSYNC) ) Security, reliability, automatic resume Automation tools, SDK, central management So in a nutshell, FileCatalyst will play fair on your network. FileCatalyst can transfer files up to 10Gbps in a single stream. FileCatalyst can be configured to transfer huge amounts of small files efficiently. FileCatalyst can also handle large files. In addition, FileCatalyst has features that reduce the amount of data sent across the wire. Compression on the fly will compress data in transit and decompress before the data is written to disk. Incremental Deltas will ensure only the parts of the file that are modified are transferred. FileCatalyst offers secure, reliable and managed transfers with the ability to automatically resume broken transfers. FileCatalyst has automation tools as well a strong SDK which can be used for integration into other products. FileCatalyst also has a Central management that provides a bird’s eye view of your entire deployment. 9 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2014

Roadmap Windows support (IBC or sooner) Ability to transfer files to any email address using Workflow.

Q&A At this time, I would like to invite our audience to ask any questions they may have. There is a question panel on the GoToMeeting webinar. As questions come in, I will read them out so that everyone can hear the question. DEFINE TWO QUESTIONS THAT WE CAN ASK IN CASE NO ONE ASKS QUESTIONS. Are they any speed/performance differences between using any of the clients vs using the Panel? Can I close down Premier Pro after I start a transfer? | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2014
