Rome as Monarchy: 753-510 BC Seven Kings

Lucius Tarquinus Suberbus: Last King of Rome

Collitinus and Lucretia were married. Sextus Tarquinus …what a jerk. Collitinus and Lucretia were married.

The rebellion against Tarquin was led by MARCUS JUNIUS BRUTUS Marcus Junius Brutus and Collitinus became the first CONSULS of Rome thus initiating The Roman Republic

The lawmaking body of Ancient Rome. The Roman Senate The lawmaking body of Ancient Rome. Two Senators per year were elected as CONSULS… sort of like co-presidents

The Romans of the Republic, after their experience with monarchy, were VERY TOUCHY about one man getting too… much… power… Emergency: Dictator

Patricians Equestrians Plebians Slaves

The Roman Republic was a very successful government lasting from 510 BC to 23 BC: that’s almost 500 years! Thus far, the United States of America has only been around for 236 years.

HOWEVER… The last one hundred years or so of the Roman Republic was riddled with CIVIL WAR. It is during this time that William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar takes place.
