Key Terms Covered Republic – Legion – A form of government in which the leader is not a king or queen but someone put in office by citizens with the right to vote. In a republic, the citizens have the power. Legion – A group of Roman soldiers numbering around 6000 men.

Key Terms Covered Dictator – – Magistrate A person who ruled with complete power temporarily in times of emergencies. – Magistrate An elected official in Rome.

Key Terms Covered – Checks & Balances – Forum A system that distributes the power of government over several departments. – Forum A Roman public meeting place.

Government & Society Why did the patricians fear that the plebeians would rise up to overthrow them? The plebeians did not have any power and could not hold elected office. What did the patricians do to address the plebeians concerns? They created new offices that could only be held by plebeians. These offices protected the rights of plebeians.

Government & Society What were the parts of Rome’s tripartite government? What did each part do? Magistrates They were the leaders of the various departments of Rome’s government. These were elected positions and terms varied from 1 to 2 years.

Government & Society What were the parts of Rome’s tripartite government? What did each part do? Assemblies and Tribunes Assemblies – primary purpose was to elect magistrates who ran the city of Rome. Tribunes – They held the power of veto over the decisions of other city officials.

Government & Society Who was the head of the Roman government? Consuls – There were two and they served for two-year terms. How did the Romans feel about their participation in government? They felt it was their civic duty to serve and help Rome prosper.

Government & Society What did the Romans do to make sure no part of government became too powerful? They set up a system of checks & balances. Different parts of the government had the power to approve or veto the decisions of other parts of the government. Term limits in office.

Government & Society What was the first written law code of Rome? The Twelve Tables created in 450 B.C. Why was this code of laws written down and where was it displayed? So people could see what the laws were. The Twelve Tables were located in the Roman Forum.
