Kielder Water Why was it built? A large artificial reservoir in North East England. The largest artificial lake in the UK (based on capacity). Over 27 miles of shore line. Holds 200 billion litres. Why was it built? In the 1960s there was a rise in demand for water in this area so the reservoir was created. Kielder forest was built around it which happens to be the largest man-made woodland in the UK. It is a very popular tourist attraction with many activities available including water sports, walking and cycling tracks. An observatory has also been built there.
