Chapter 1: Welcome to the Design World Amy Smith

Who is Amy Smith? Is a mechanical engineer instructor at MIT Is motivated by a deep desire to collaborate with people in developing nations to overcome serious health and environmental problems. Went to Haiti to solve an issue.

Key Words Technology Engineers Scientists Technologies Patent Appropriate technology Microenterprise

Technology refers to... Everything that people do to change the natural world to suit human needs and wants Electric devices iPhones Advanced medical equipment

Amy Smith went to Dominican Republic Puerto Rico Haiti Las Vegas

Engineers Invent new products. Create theories or undertake experiments to learn more about the natural world. Create or improve technologies to suit human needs and wants. Fix machines

Define appropriate technology in your own words. Is a technology that can be made, maintained, repaired , and improve with the resources that are available in a particular community.

DQ1: How has engineering been important in human history? Give at least three examples. Stone Age, Iron Age, Industrial Revolution, etc. Fire, stones, the wheel, the printing press, the light bulb, the telephone, the A-bomb, the Internet, etc.

DQ2: What is the difference between a scientist and engineers? A scientist conducts research to learn about the natural world. An engeer develops new technologies in response to human needs and wants. Engineers produce the instruments that scientists need to investigate the natural world.

DQ3: What is patent? Is a document issued by the government that gives an inventor the sole right to make, distribute, or sell a particular invention for a certain number of years. Why do most engineers patent their designs? Why did Amy choose not patent her design?
