6.1.2 Powers and Exponents Word Problems

Nursery Rhyme Solve the following nursery rhyme using your skills in powers, exponents, and operations… As I was going to St. Ives I met a man with seven wives Each wife had seven sacks Each sack had seven cats Each cat had seven kits Kits, cats, sacks, wives How many were going to St. Ives?

Here’s another one… Solve the following nursery rhyme using your skills in powers, exponents, and operations… As I was walking into town I met a ringmaster with five clowns Each clown had five magicians Each magician had five bunnies Each bunny had five fleas Fleas, bunnies, magicians, clowns How many were going to town?

Powers of Ten Use exponents to complete the table. Describe the pattern. 10 100 1,000 10,000 100,000 1,000,000 10¹ 10²

Area of a square This donut shop sign has a side length of 3 feet. What is the area of the sign? If we know this is a square, then we know all sides are the same length. If one side is 3 feet, then all sides are 3 feet. To find the area of a square or rectangle, multiply the length and width of the shape. 3 x 3 OR 3² The area of the sign is 9 feet 3 ft.

Your turn Your dad hates to mow the lawn and is thrilled that you are finally old enough to do it yourself. You have a pretty big square yard and are not thrilled that you have to mow it. What is the area of the yard you are now tortured to mow? 104 ft.

Area of a Cube This cube box has a side length of 2 feet. What is the area of the box? If we know this is a cube, then we know all sides are the same length. If one side is 2 feet, then all sides are 2 feet. To find the area of a cube, multiply the length and width and height of the cube. 2 x 2 x 2 OR 2³ The area of the box is 8 feet 2 ft.

Your turn For your birthday you asked for a present packed with Legos because you have the perfect cube toy box with an area of 27 feet to put the Legos in. At your birthday party you see a HUGE cube present on the floor. If it’s packed with Legos, you’re wondering if they’ll all fit in your toy box. You measure one side of the present before your mom catches you and tells you to stop. Now you have to do the math. Will the possible Legos inside the big cube present all fit in your cube toy box? 4 ft.

Eh, it was a big stuffed bear anyway…
