Objective – Teach players to run with the ball and scan the field TCYSA PRACTICE PLAN (6 – 12 YEAR OLDS): RUNNING WITH THE BALL Objective – Teach players to run with the ball and scan the field 1. Look out for Coach! Activity Time: 1 min Recovery Time: 30 sec (juggling) Duration: 10 min Intervals: 4 (followed by ABC movements) Organization: Set up a playing field with cones. Each players has a ball and dribbles while the coach tries to poke the ball away. Coaching Points: Teach players to dribble with the outside of foot (pinky toe). Teach players to scan the field and dribble to open space. Guided Question: What part of the foot do we use to dribble the fastest? 2. Playground Tag Activity Time: 1 min Recovery Time: 1 min (juggling) Duration: 12 min Intervals: 6 Organization: Designate two taggers and place in bibs. All players have a ball except for the tagger. When a player is tagged they have to dribble to the coach and give them a high five to continue. Rotate coaching position for players to scan field. Coaching Points: Teach players to dribble with head up. Teach players to turn away from the tagger with outside of foot and dribble to open space. Guided Question: What’s a way that you can get away from a tagger? 3. 2v2 to Dribble Through Gates Activity Time: 15 seconds per group Recovery Time: Until next rep Duration: 15 min Intervals: (4) 3 min games Organization: 25x15 field with 4 gates. Players are divided into 2 teams. 2 players on each team enter field and the coach plays balls in for about 15 sec. Each team tries to score as many goals as possible by dribbling through gates. A running total is kept until the end of a 3 min game. Coaching Points: Teach players to dribble when they have space and to pass if they reach a defender. Guided Question: When you are dribbling, and a defender stops you what can you do to help your team keep the ball? 4. Match Activity Time: 10 min Recovery Time: 2 min Duration: 22 min Intervals: 2 Organization: Create as realistic of a game environment as possible by have players in positions and playing with FIFA Laws of the Game. Coaching Points: Use this time to observe the players in a game environment and their application of running with the ball. Teach players to attack the space in front of them. Guided Question: What is a way that you can attack when you have space in front of you?
