ACTIVE SHOOTER BRIEF CONCLUSION

PREPARED? The previous write-ups and videos have demonstrated the basic guidelines of an Active Shooter event. Nothing can prepare you 100% for such an occurrence. The purpose of this training has been to give you more information…a stepping off point. AVOID: •Have an escape route and plan in mind; post in your room and/or office •Leave your belongings behind – and do not go back for anything or anyone •Keep your hands visible (Responding law enforcement does not know who the shooter is yet) DENY: •Doors MUST remain locked at all times !!! •Hide in an area out of the active shooter’s view •Cover the door’s window • If there is not a lock, or the door opens outward, block entry to your hiding place using large items such as desks and bookcases DEFEND: •As a last resort and only if your life is in imminent danger •Use any item in your room as a weapon (Scissors, fire extinguisher, a chair) •Throw items at the shooter(s) to disorient them while others attempt to incapacitate them •Act with determined, physical aggression. Understand your life is on the line and if placed in this situation you must act as if “it is them or me” CALL 911 WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO

DID YOU KNOW? The school district has a comprehensive plan for an active shooter event. This plan has been developed and reviewed with implementation beginning March 2016. Currently 4 meetings have taken place for teachers and local citizens to know how the school district has prepared for such an event. This plan is a collaborative effort between local, state and federal officials to include school, police, fire and EMS personnel. Each class room should have a red folder containing procedures for all code events. Teachers need to add their rosters to these folders in the event of an evacuation in order to maintain a positive head count of students. If you have a student that you feel needs counseling you can refer them to that student’s schools counselor who is trained to assist that student including referral to outside resources. Cobb County GA has partnered with CodeRed, an active alert system, that you can sign-up for.
