Sparta 900-600BC military power Provide security and protection Legend- Lycurgus created the social system after a slave revolt

Sparta- Men Daily life dominated by military Children looked at children at birth- if unhealthy, the child was abandoned Boys were trained to be soldiers usually starting at age 7- went to live in barracks Hardships- no shoes or heavy clothing in winter, little food, extreme physical training Courage and strength important Live in barracks until 30 yr old. Stay in army until 60 yr old Believe in few luxuries

Sparta- women More rights Could own land, ran households Physical training not as severe

Sparta- government 2 kings- led army Elected officials- ran day to day activities, set foreign policy Control over helots-slaves

Athens Value Physical training Education Clear thinking arts

Athens- men Boys- physical training Spent 2 yr in army (18-20 yr old), or in times of war Basic education- reading, writing, math, music, history Older, richer boys educated in geometry, astronomy, philosophy, oration, and government Poor boys became farmers and craftworkers

Athens- girls No education for majority Rich- taught to read and write All- taught sewing and household tasks Few rights- Couldn’t take part in government Couldn’t leave home except for certain important events Couldn’t buy or sell anything Couldn’t disobey husband or father
