2009 Estimates for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in China
Aims and estimation methods To provide update on estimates of populations affected by HIV to guide policy and programming. Methods Workbook was used for development of the estimates. Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) and Spectrum were used to estimate the number of new infections and deaths after consideration of the impact of antiretroviral treatment.

Epidemic features in China The rate of increase in the growth of the epidemic has slowed further. Sexual transmission continues to be the primary mode of HIV transmission, with homosexual transmission increasing rapidly. National prevalence is low, but the epidemic is serious in some areas and among some most-at-risk populations. The number of people affected by HIV/AIDS is increasing and modes of transmission are diversifying.
