Class Schedule

Library We read every morning so keeping their library book in the classroom is a good idea.

Agendas and Home Folder Please check daily for notes from me Please feel free to send notes Sign every night/I sign each morning Home Folder (Yellow): Please empty each night Place all money and forms in zip lock bags or labeled envelopes into home folder Children empty home folder into “IN” Bin each morning

School Supplies Please label all supplies Thank you all for sending indoor shoes We supply all classroom supplies/folders but students may bring in their own pencils/markers etc. Please bring in a tissue box each term

Wellness Policy If your child is sick, please keep them home and I will catch them up when they return Children who are at school are expected to participate in all activities Children who come to school sick expose other children, and because parents cannot take time off work, they send their children to school sick, making your child sick!

Homework 30 minutes each night of studying for tests, projects, and finishing up work Read for 20 minutes each night Anything sent home will not be marked, however homework is good for practicing skills, studying for tests, working co-operatively with family members, and building responsibility Please bring back homework each day If it is not completed please write a note in their agenda http://www.yrdsb.ca/boarddocs/Documents/PP-homework-320.pdf -ensure that the maximum allotted time for homework in the elementary panel does not increase by more than ten minutes per grade level, beginning with ten minutes in grade one, for a maximum of four nights per week;

Clothing Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. With the cold, wet weather on the way, perhaps a spare pair of dry socks can be put into your child’s backpack. A pair of indoor running shoes (non-skid or white soles) Children go outside in all weather (up to -20C) and need to be dressed warmly with snow pants, a hat, waterproof gloves, warm boots and a scarf

Things to Know: Snacks and Water Reminder that our instructional period in the morning is very long, please send a nutritious snack for recess. Children must bring a water bottle Washroom Rule Students are to go to the washroom before school, at recess (30 minute break), at lunch (60 min break). They are allowed to leave once a day during instructional time. This reduces the amount of learning time lost. Agendas Students build responsibility and organizational skills by writing in their agenda daily about important events/homework They are expected to show parents their agenda (and have it signed every night)

What is Assessment “Information about how well students are understanding the new concepts and the skills they are learning”   - is all the work a child has done over the unit - shows their progress - helps teachers decide what to cover again or next - improves student learning - pays attention to student’s needs - is written observations of what the child can do - understands and explains student’s strengths, and weaknesses - checks for understanding - leads to written and oral feedback - includes self and peer assessment

What is Evaluation? Children will be give the opportunity to show what they know in multiple ways. Progress and understanding of concepts will be checked. This evidence will be used to provide a mark of student learning that will be communicated to both students and parents. The final mark for each strand will be used for the report card.   How will my child be evaluated? Conferences Conversations/discussions projects in-class assignments presentations tests/quizzes hands on activities observations

What is Written Feedback? Feedback is information about a child’s abilities, strengths, weaknesses and what they can do to improve before the evaluation.   Why is written feedback important? Students need to know where they can improve, and how best to reach their goals. Feedback shows students what they have done well, and strategies to try. It gives clear information about a child’s abilities and next steps. How do parents help with written feedback? Children will bring their work home, with the written feedback. Parents can then praise their child for their hard work as well as go over ways to improve. Positive encouragement and reading the written feedback together, provides the child with support. They can try out the strategies, and practice the skills together. Parents can also ask questions to the teacher or raise concerns.
