E.L.T. 02/19/15 Typing Lesson Warm Up: Closing: In your vision board journals, respond to the following prompt: “What does it mean to have support? Who would you describe as your support system/team? Why? Are you supportive of others? How?” Work Session: Typing Lesson Closing: Support Posters – These will be hung around the school, so make sure they are 100% positive!

Language Arts – Warm Up 02/19/15 Sit in your Blue Teams. Warm Up Jabberwocky First, read each poem. Then, circle all of the unknown or nonsense words you can find. Place this warm up in your poetry folders. Staple your Poetry Folder Checklist on the inside cover of your poetry folder.

02/19/15 Essential Question: How can I use my knowledge of figurative language to increase my reading comprehension? Standard: RL.6.4 – Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Language Arts – Work session 02/19/15 Alliteration When several words that begin with the same sound are next to each other or close together, it is called alliteration. ex. The babbling brook bubbled into the bay.

Language Arts – Work session 02/19/15 Alliteration – “Free as a…” List all the examples of alliteration you can find in the poem. The images that are presented in the poem are from two points of view: from a child’s perspective and from a bird’s. Tell whether the following are from the child’s or bird’s point of view: outside my window, a worm for breakfast, tops of trees, I wonder, streets like lines. Who is “taking one wild step into air”? Explain this part of the poem. Tell about a time when you did something for the first time. Did you feel like you were “taking one wild step into air”? Describe what you did and how you felt.

Language Arts – Work session 02/19/15 Onomatopoeia When a word sounds like the noise of the sound that it stands for, it is called onomatopoeia. ex. Buzzzz, sizzle

Language Arts – Work session 02/19/15 Onomatopoeia – “Two Old Crows” Write some examples of onomatopoeia from this poem. Write down 2-3 more examples that are not from the poem. How does the poet personify the crows in this poem? What were the crows thinking about before one of them asked the riddle? Think about the joke told by the muttering crow. If the bee’s “fiddle” refers to bee’s buzzing sound, what is the bee’s “sword”? Explain.

Language Arts – Work session 02/19/15 Community Map Use your rough draft to create the real poster. You will need the following items on your map: Your six significant, labeled places Streets, trees, and other important landmarks Floyd Middle School A compass to show direction Remember-These 6 places have meaning to YOU!

Language Arts – Closing session 02/19/15 Community Map – Due tomorrow! On your post-it note, write one example of alliteration and one example of onomatopoeia for any of your six locations. An example of your post-it note: Alliteration: Perfectly poised petunia plants are potted. Onomatopoeia The frog jumped into the pond with a splash.

02/19/15 Closing Session Homework: Homework packet – Due FRIDAY this week Add to your Reading Record (extra credit) Each entry needs parental initials!
