Chapter 5: Crossing the causeway… Inquiry Question How does Hill use descriptive detail?

1) Across a double page, draw four boxes. 2) Write the name of the four chapters in each box. 3) Draw images which represent what happened, in each chapter. 4) Select at least two quotations which you feel represent the most important aspects of this chapter. Chapter 1: Christmas Eve Chapter 2: A London Particular Chapter 3: The Journey North Chapter 4: The Funeral of Mrs Drablow

I was the one who had been haunted and who had suffered. A Christmas Eve I was the one who had been haunted and who had suffered. It was from me alone that the ghost must be driven.

Setting Susan Hill chose to set Eel Marsh House (Mrs Drablow’s house) in a isolated place. You are going to see two images, which represent what the landscape looks like. In your exercise books you are going to complete the following sentence starter. I think Hill chose this setting because:

Descriptive Detail If you think the word or phrase creates the impression that Arthur is content or curious draw this type of ‘Arthur face’ on your whiteboard. If you think the word or phrase creates the impression that Arthur is unsettled or scared draw this type of ‘Arthur face’ on your whiteboard.

Today, all was bright and clear

I scarcely saw a tree, but the hedgerows were dark and twiggy and low.

My head reeled at the sheer and startling beauty, the wide, bare openness of it.

The rumble of the wheels and the creak of the cart, were sudden, harsh weird cries from birds near and far.

We seemed to be driving towards the very edge of the world.

When the tide came in , it would quickly be quite submerged and untraceable.

I wanted to drink in all the silence and the mysterious, shimmering beauty.

The wind that came suddenly snaking off the estuary was cold.

It was an ugly, satanic-looking thing, like some species of sea-vulture-if such a thing existed.

Let’s Read! Across the Causeway

Arthur’s anxiety At the end of this chapter Arthur is feeling anxious about who and what the mysterious woman in black is. His feelings and attitude towards her have changed significantly, since Mrs Drablow’s funeral. He now thinks that she might be a ghost.

How does Susan Hill suggest that the woman in black is a ghost? As you read the chapter, try to find three sentences or words, that suggest that the woman in black is a ghost. Write these quotations into your exercise book and next to them draw a small picture to show me how you picture the ghost.
