What is this talk about? Stuff you might want a friend or a loved one to know.

What is this talk about? Sun damage-actinic keratosis, solar keratosis Skin cancers- the 3 most common types New treatments for sun damage and skin cancers which are available to everyone. Also How to prevent skin cancers

AUSTRALIA Has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world

Skin Cancer Fact People living in Australia have a 1 in 2 chance of developing a skin cancer during their lifetime. Melanoma is the most common cancer affecting ages 15-39.

2 groups of skin cancer that we deal in Common-Non melanoma skin cancers- Squamous cell carcinoma and Basal cell carcinoma Less common Melanoma

Mythbusting 1; - Most melanomas NOT from moles You need ALL of your skin checked

Results of skin cancer Yoiks!

Skin cancer detection is not always easy….

Which one is the melanoma?

Which one is the melanoma?

Detecting skin cancers Any abnormality on the body A- asymmetry B-border irregularity C-colour change D-diameter OR E-enlarging F-firm G-rowing

Melanoma Doesn't always need sun exposure But the main risk is still episodic severe sun burn in childhood and teenage years 3rd most common skin cancer 1500 deaths per year related to Melanoma Can occur in scalp, genitals, the eyes and non sun exposed areas

MELANOMA

Does this look like anyone you know?

Images of melanomas

Non melanoma skin cancers Bcc and Scc as previously discussed. Can arise from cummulative sun exposure over many years Sun burn also increases their risk

Sun damage Is a precurser to skin cancer. UV light causes mutations in normal skin and these mutations can progress. Initially the skin becomes raised, dry, scaly and pink.

What sun damage looks like

More actinic keratosis

Sun damage recurs with time

Sun damage is the tip of the iceberg.

Older treatments for sun damage Cryotherapy-freezing until the top layer of skin blisters or dies off Chemical peels Cutting and scraping

Limitations of excision, curettage, freezing etc Even if we cut out a lesion we are bringing severely sun damaged skin back together again Even if we freeze sun damage we are not treating the surrounding skin and missing the sun damaged skin that is there that we cannot see

The Good News.

NEW TREAMENTS!

Your average Aussie bloke Fair skin Lots of sun damage Rosacea, pigmentation & sunspots, premature aging Been slack with sunscreen Can we help him? Or is he stuffed and on the slippery slope downwards?

Field treatments Prevents skin cancer from arising Removes ultraviolet damaged skin Treats the 2 most common types of EARLY skin cancer BCC & SCC Makes you look better

Photodynamic therapy Acne, rosacea & hidradenitis Skin dysplasia & cancer photorejuvenation DVA covers treatment Problem PAIN

PDT treatment

“Field” treatments Clear up field Easier surveillence Cosmesis Pain Get 5-10 years clearance esp if use Zn sunscreen Easier surveillence Detect future cancers earlier

Treatment options for sun damage skin - Creams PICATO ALDARA EFUDIX SOLARAZE

Expect Redness , flaking, peeling, scab, crust, swelling, pain or itch— Early as day 1 Peaks in the first week Resolves in one week ( for the face) and in 2 weeks for leg, arm ,body.

Simple prevention Slip on some sunscreen -30+ or more Slop on a shirt Slap on a hat Seek shade Slip on sunglasses Avoid the sun from 11 am -3pm

Prevention is cheaper than treatment

B3-T SUPERFLUID Best sunscreen in the world by a Country Mile! SPF 110+ Zinc based Non greasy, transparent Vitamin B3 – only one in the world 6 hours water resistant Low viscosity = complete coverage (ie, no holes to get burnt) Over 50% skin cancer reduction rates. All ASFB Skin Cancer patients are prescribed this.

Skin and the Sun Conflict between UV radiation causing skin cancer, aging, rosacea and Vit D production Balance required. Good sunscreen Covering up Hat NOT cap Round neck shirt NOT V neck Long sleeves Gloves

Prevention is cheaper than treatment

Poor Coverage This explains why people say “I put sunscreen on but still got burnt”

Vitamin D Either get it in a tablet or amounts can be calculated per latitude eg Cairns 5 mins in summer and 10 mins in winter is enough- 4-6 x per week Hobart 10 mins in summer and 50 minutes in winter is enough-4-6x per week with no sunglasses, sunscreen on face, hand, arms

The Australian college of Dermatologists suggests that people examine their skin at home 4 x per year. People at higher risk of melanoma should have a whole body skin exam with a medical professional at least once per year.

“When was the last time you had a skin check?” “I don’t know, I forgot to make an appointment!"

What to do if you find a spot? OMG

A little help from your friends we look behind your ears, your scalp, your back- in fact all over !

THANKS! Thankyou for listening
