Bolt’s World Records Beijing 2008 This gives a top speed of 12.2m/s Fastest 10m was between 50m and 80m The time for each of these intervals was: 50-60m - .82s 60-70m - .82s 70-80m - .82s This gives a top speed of 12.2m/s Berlin 2009 Fastest 10m was between 60m and 70m The time for this interval was .81s This gives a top speed of 12.3m/s

Comparison to Average Speed Determine the average speed for each race (total distance over total time) This gives 10.3m/s for Beijing This gives 10.4m/s for Berlin

Displacement The displacement is defined as the distance from your start point to your end point For example, looking at the table for Michael Phelps, the first leg of the race would have a displacement of +50.m while the second leg would have a displacement of -50.m

Calculating Displacement To calculate displacement, you will subtract the finishing position from the starting position First leg Start 0m Finish 50m Displacement = 50m – 0m = 50m Second leg Start 50m Finish 0m Displacement = 0m – 50m = -50m

Displacement Signs The sign in the displacement gives us the direction of motion Positive would indicate movement to the right Negative would indicate movement to the left Calculate the displacement for each remaining leg of Michael Phelps’s race

Velocity Velocity is determined by using displacement divided by time Like displacement, the sign gives the direction of motion Determine the velocity for each of the legs of the race by dividing the displacement by the time
