College Student’s Time Management: Having a Job vs Not having a Job Genna boyce

Lit Review Many studies showed that there is benefits and disadvantages for working while in school Less time to spend on studying (Lang 2012) Job demands have a negative impact on students’ satisfaction and well-being (Chambel & Curral, 2005) Job went along with studies (Butler, 2007) Jobs improve social, cognitive, and practical skills (Greene & Maggs, 2015) Hypothesis: Students who are employed will have better time management than those who are not employed

Method Participants are students taking lower level psychology courses. Will be able volunteer to participate by signing up on a sheet that’s posted on the bulletin board outside the psychology office Estimated time needed is 20 minutes Need around 60 participants 2 X 2 mixed within-subjects factorial design Task condition: Filler puzzle and critical reading comprehension Job condition: Employed or unemployed Two dependent variables: Percent of time spent on each task and number of correct answers

Material

Procedure Given 5 minutes to work on the filler task and five minutes to work on the reading comprehension Can continue to work on filler task if not completed, but effects reading time After 10 minutes have ended participants will have to answer questions for the reading Will be thanked for their time and given a blue extra credit card for 20 minutes

Results Time spent on both task will be recorded Correct answers will be collected Employment status will be gathered 2 X 2 within subjects ANOVA Measures the mean and standard deviation of each condition Two ANOVAs will have to be conducted Will determine if employed participants spent more time on the reading comprehension which lead to them getting more correct answers. Thus showing a greater control over their time management.
