A European Brewer Network - EUBREWNET ES1207 Start date: 29/04/2013 End date: 29/04/2017 Year: Starting John Rimmer Chair University of Manchester, UK

Scientific context and objectives (1/2) Background: Although our understanding of the processes that affect ozone concentrations in the stratosphere have grown significantly in recent years, there are still uncertainties in the predictions of future trends and the quantification of the effects of policy measures to protect the Ozone Layer. Brief reminder of MoU objectives: To establish a coherent network of European Brewer Spectrophotometer stations to harmonise and achieve consistency in QC, QA and coordinated operations for ozone, UV and AOD.

Scientific context and objectives (2/2) Research directions: Instrument characterisation. Standardisation of calibration protocols. Standard data processing algorithms. Effective QA/QC systems linked to satellite data. Understanding of uncertainties. Innovation: Co location of ozone, UV and AOD(UV) measurements with spatial consistency for feedback into model predictions from satellite data.

Working groups Working group 1: Characterisation and calibration. Working group 2: Algorithm development Working group 3: Network governance and data management. Working group 4: Users, public outreach and application.

Future Plan and Challenges Site characterisations. Instrument characterisation methods (e.g. stray light, filters, field of view). Calibration methods for AOD. Data processing algorithms. Error budgets. Database development.
