Key Stage 4 Courses 2018 chaseterracetechnologycollege Ms. N. Mason - Deputy Headteacher Mr. T. Chamberlin - Headteacher

Outline of tonight's presentation …. Qualifications The Wider Context Reasons to choose subjects What courses are available? Help and advice Numbers and dates

Qualification types …. Students make the wisest option choices when they understand how they learn best Consider a preferred learning approach before considering a subject

GCSE Entry for some GCSEs are at either Higher (9 to 4 or equivalent to old grades A*-D) or Foundation (5 to 1 or equivalent to old grades C-G) levels. The current GCSEs are relatively new courses that all now have new grades (9 down to 1) Examined at the end of Year11

BTEC Level 2 First award/Tech Levels A BTEC’s course content features unit assignments that need to be completed practically and then written up with advice and guidance from the teacher. BTEC students will enjoy independent learning approaches; 75% of the assessment is through ongoing coursework with 25% being external assessment. Level 2 grades – Distinction* - Pass (Equivalent to 8.5-4 or A*-C grades at GCSE) Level 1 grades are also available for these courses

THE WIDER CONTEXT English Baccalaureate - GCSEs at 9 to 4 or A*-C grade in all of: English, Maths, 2 Sciences, History or Geography, a Language Our core curriculum comprises 4 EBacc GCSEs so at least one further EBacc GCSE will need to be selected through option choices.

OUR POSITION Breadth and opportunity Advice and guidance Wide variety of GCSE and BTEC courses to maximise choice and enable a greater number of students to succeed EBacc opportunity Strong progression routes into Sixth Form and/or on to college / training Advice and guidance Individual consultation with each student and a senior member of staff Independent careers advice at hand

Guiding your choices …. Most future career options will not be affected by the choices you make at this stage in your education. Choose subjects you: like are good at are particularly interested in feel might help you in the general career area that you are interested in such as ‘working with people’ or ‘using my practical skills’   Do not choose subjects because: You like the teacher - you may have a different one next year. Your friends have chosen it - they may be in a different group.

Core Subjects …. GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature GCSE Maths GCSE Science (2 GCSE grades) P.E. OCN R.E. PLUS 3 x Optional Courses …. we ask you to list your top 5 choices on your option form in your preferred order

SINGLE Optional Choices …. BTEC Business BTEC Sport Tech Level Health and Social Care BTEC Music BTEC Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Information and Creative Technology (ICT) GCSE History GCSE Computer Science GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE Graphics Technology GCSE Textiles Technology GCSE Resistant Materials Technology GCSE Art & Design GCSE Sociology GCSE Geography GCSE French GCSE German GCSE Philosophy and Ethics

Option Ebacc Subjects: 1 of your 3 option subjects MUST come from this list. Computer Science French Geography German History
