How do we teach this in school? Differentiated phonics groups daily. One group focused on environmental sounds and then moving onto rhyme Next group is orally blending sounds Third group starting letters and sounds continuing with lots of blending and segmenting practise.

Letters and Sounds Phonics program to teach children how to read and write Phase 1- environmental sounds, awareness of rhyme, alliteration, oral blending and segmenting Phase 2 sounds taught in a ‘set’ e.g. ‘s, a, t, p’ We teach sounds not names at the beginning Key sight words to learn and words that do not ‘sound out’ are ‘tricky words’ e.g. ‘the, to, no, go, I, into’

What does the curriculum say? Bit of maths! Work out your child’s age in months…

Tricky words- they don't 'sound out' Reception Focus- How can I help with reading? Asking where the words are? Where are the pictures? When I read where do I start? Learning tricky words from memory using bookmarks sent home in reading books. Ask children to press their ‘sound buttons’ to read a word e.g ‘m-a-t’ Are there any tricky words? Asking children questions about the book Sound buttons Tricky words- they don't 'sound out'

School reading books and books Language recognition/decoding - key words, sounding out words Reading comprehension - understanding what you have read School reading books and books from home

Also… After reading the story with the children can you please ask them questions such as… Who are the characters are in the story? What happens at the beginning and the end? What was your favourite in the story? Where is the setting? Please don’t worry about levels of reading books. Quality reading is better than racing through the levels.

How can I help my child with Letters and Sounds at home? 1. Sound buttons for READING- if your child is struggling to read ask to press ‘sound buttons’ cat 2. Tricky words- learning by sight given out as bookmarks to collect Tricky words - don't 'sound out'

Reading – End of EYFS Expectation Early Learning Goal Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

How to change reading books Books will be changed by an adult during you child’s weekly 1:1 read. Book bag should be brought everyday with Home-School diary and reading book. Fridays

Writiing – End of EYFS Expectation Early Learning Goal Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Writing opportunities… Shopping lists Writing name (letters formed correctly) Labels – family on a picture, label a den they’ve made e.g ‘Bear Cave’ Write rules for a role play area Captions to pictures ‘dog on a mat’ Stories N.B when writing your child’s name and other words please do not use capital letters (unless it is the first letter of their name!)

How can I help my child with their writing? Valuing any attempt at writing. Asking ‘Will you read it to me?’ Encourage the children to have a try using their real letters - not writing it correctly for them and children copying Asking to use ‘robot talk’ Tricky words from memory Writing Bag - CHILD’S WRITING NOT YOURS PLEASE!

Handwriting We teach pre- cursive print for example We have ‘lazy letters’ that need waking up so we start on the line and ‘drag them out of bed’ Letter patter… e.g a - ‘drag it out of bed, around the apple, down the leaf’

How can I help my child with handwriting? IMPROVING FINE MOTOR SKILLS BY… Gluing PVA - glue stick or lollipop stick threading play dough - manipulating jigsaw puzzles cutting buttoning/zipping
