Conflict with Native Americans

Do Now SWBAT explain the cause of conflict between Native Americans and settlers. Do Now: What does it mean to “own” something? Why do we own land?

Native Americans and the English Settlers When colonists first came to North America, Native American tribes and colonists came into contact with each other—some were friendly encounters, while others were combative.

Conflict or fights often broke out between Native Americans and English settlers especially, killing thousands of people.

KING PHILIP’ WAR One of these fights was called “King Philip’s War” King Philip (his real name was Metacom) waged a war against settlers who were coming into Native American land in 1675-1676 The Native Americans lost, and many people from both sides died

One reason settlers and Native Americans fought so much was because of trade disputes. English settlers got mad at the Native Americans for trading with people from other countries, especially the French.

A second reason they fought was because of land. Native Americans attacked English settlers for trying to advance and take over their land and homes. Native Americans did not believe in “owning” land, you simply used the natural resources that were available where you were. CFU: How would the ideas of land ownership create conflict?

CFUs What happened to Native Americans or colonists when a relationship was in conflict? What is one reason the English settlers fought with the Native Americans? What is a reason the Native Americans fought with the English colonists?

Some Native American tribes, however, became allies (friends) with the English colonists. Native Americans helped colonists adapt to their new environment, and also traded with them. Some Native American tribes would attack enemy Native American tribes with the English.

4. When Native Americans were allies with English colonists, how did they help each other? 5. What is the final reason why Native Americans would ally themselves with colonists?

NEW FRANCE The French were also in the Americas, called New France Their focus was on fur trading (animal pelts) Had many trading partners who became their allies In general, they had a better relationship with the Native Americans than the English because they learned native languages and married into tribes

Reasons for Conflict: Trade disputes Land disputes Reasons to be allies: Trade Be allies against your enemies

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Create a comic strip of the relationship between English settlers, New France, and Native Americans. Use the following terms: New France, allies, trade partners, King Philip’s War, English settlers, trade dispute, land dispute

EXIT SLIP 1. What are two reasons Native Americans and colonists fought with each other? 2. What are two reasons Native Americans and colonists became allies? 3. How were the ways that New France and the English colonies treated the Native Americans similar or different?
