Britain colonized the east coast of North America (Virginia) in the early 1600s

1587: Roanoke Island (North Carolina) was colonized unsuccessfully Supply ships returned 3 years later to find it abandoned

A company was formed to provide money for the next attempt Investors pooled money and bought shares (hoping for profits)

Founded to make a profit. Colonists planned to find gold, steal from Spanish ships, and develop cash crops

1500-1600: rise in crime and poverty Population increase 3 to 4million. Solution? Send the poor to Virginia

3 ships carrying 100 men left for America Colonists were gentleman, ex- soldiers, craftsmen, laborers

Ex-soldier Recorded the history of the settlement Emerged as the leader of Jamestown

Native American tribe that lived around Jamestown A confederation of many tribes (20,000 members) under Chief Powhatan)

The daughter of Chief Powhatan who was friendly with the English Native American ally for Jamestown settlers

During first 9 months, many die: 10438 Between 1607 and 1622, 10,000 people sent to Jamestown and only 2,000 remained

The gentleman refused to farm or do hard labor The colonists depended on Native Americans for food

Year 1 was a disaster Many dead, no food, no gold, no profit Colony was on the brink of collapse

He instituted military discipline, drills, and 6 hours of field labor per day Everybody hated him After an accident in 1609, Smith returned to England

During the winter of 1609-1610, the colonists ran out of food Colonists got more and more desperate animals leather excrement dead bodies

You have been put in charge of recruiting British settlers to come to Jamestown Create a flyer with pictures and a slogan (ie: don’t frown, come to Jamestown) that would entice British people to come to Jamestown, Virginia Consider the reasons why some people would want to move 3,000 miles from their home Make sure you “bend” the truth and have at least 3 examples of deception on your flyer (ie: indentured servant).

The colonists abandoned Jamestown after the Starving Time in 1610 As they were leaving, they saw a supply ship coming and turned around In the coming years, conditions in Jamestown would improve

A gentleman who started growing tobacco in Jamestown Married Pocahontas and had a son, Thomas

Tobacco was the savior of Jamestown It was the reason that the colony became profitable and survived.

Jamestown was the first permanent British settlement in America Jamestown expanded and became the colony of Virginia Jamestown is considered the birthplace of the United States
